What were your accomplishments at age 1? Maybe you learned a few words, took a couple of steps, or ate a piece of solid food. At any rate, 12 months into life and it’s time to celebrate. Mom and Dad organize a grandiose party to commemorate you for all you’ve done. There’s an elaborate cake, balloons, decorations, guests and, of course, gifts. All for you. It’s your special day.

Seems a bit ridiculous right? Most likely, you can’t even remember what was happening at your first birthday.

Now take a look at some other significant years in your life—18, 25, 53, 71. You’ve achieved more, experienced success in your occupation, you’ve gotten married, raised a family—perhaps now it is justified having a birthday party to commemorate you for all your great accomplishments? Nope.

Why Not?

Should a true Christian celebrate birthdays? Critics may argue there is nothing wrong with a birthday celebration. “It’s just a nice way to acknowledge another year of life,” they might say.

The Bible doesn’t mention much about celebrating the date of one’s birth. In fact, the few biblical accounts where a birthday celebration is mentioned, it is associated with a pretty gruesome event. In Genesis 40:20, you can read about Pharaoh celebrating his birthday by hanging his chief baker. On Herod’s birthday, he actually gave a gift to the daughter of Herodias—the head of John the Baptist (Mark 6:21-29).

Society glorifies birthday celebrations, but as a student of the Bible, you won’t be able to find any account that portrays a birthday celebration in the same light.

Greece Stands Up To Germany In Its Economic Crisis

Greece is in economic crisis, but this past Sunday it still said no to an international bailout. This puts tremendous pressure on Germany and could change Europe’s future.

Greece is in a profound economic crisis—international creditors offered a deal that would demand serious cutbacks and austerity measures. This past Sunday, the Greeks said they would not accept that deal. What was this really about? Trumpet writer Richard Palmer says it is really about Greece standing up to the Germans. For the last five years, Germany has dominated the eurozone—Der Spiegel called it an “economic Fourth Reich.” But the Greeks have essentially exposed the limits of Germany’s power. This has huge implications for the future of the eurozone, the euro and Europe. We need to watch this situation closely. We’re going to talk to Richard about what we might expect to see in the time ahead.

The Murder of Kate Steinle and San Francisco Values

Bay area’s ‘sanctuary’ policy allows illegal alien felon to murder young woman.

Kate Steinle was killed in what appeared to be a random act of violence last week. Her killer, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, a 45-year-old illegal alien, had been deported five times to Mexico. Sanchez was being held by San Francisco authorities, but was released due to the city’s “sanctuary” law, which argues that illegals should not be kept in jail because it violates their constitutional rights. After his release, Sanchez shot Steinle in the chest as she was walking along Pier 14, a busy San Francisco tourist destination. On today’s program Stephen Flurry takes a look at the shooting in San Francisco and analyzes the dangerous policies that allowed this man to be set free.

America’s Crumbling Religious Landscape

Religious Change Is Coming
God gave the Apostle Paul exciting prophetic insight into our chaotic world. “But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people,” he wrote to his beloved son in the faith, Timothy (2 Timothy 3:1-5; English Standard Version). These few verses are a perfectly accurate picture of American society today. We may claim to be a Christian nation, but we are not living up to Christ’s high standards.
Verse 5 in particular describes the nones. They can say they believe in God and assume the appearance of godliness, but they deny the very power of God.
Here is the good news. “But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men,” continued Paul (verse 9). Jesus Christ is going to return and bring an end to all the folly we have created in religion, government and society. There is a new world coming that will be full of peace, right religion and satisfying happiness.
Until that day, you as an individual can get on the right track spiritually. Jesus Christ promised that His Church would never die (Matthew 16:18). Christ’s one true Church is alive and well on Earth today.
If you have been called by God (John 6:44), you can find that Church. How? Get to know the Bible well. Use the Bible to measure your doctrinal beliefs and religious observances. If the Bible does not support what you believe and do, flee from it! Then, use the Bible as your compass to search out and guide you to Jesus Christ’s Church. ▪
