The two-year-long divorce proceedings between Britain and the European Union kicked off yesterday. The process will be messy, expensive and fraught with tension, as Brussels will likely make an example out of the United Kingdom to discourage other member nations from also wanting to go it alone. How Can We Know Putin Will Survive?

The Trumpet can make such assertions with confidence because they are based on specific forecasts from a reliable source: the Bible. The Bible contains detailed foresights that say a Russian strongman will rise and exert enormous power on other nations.

Revelation 9:16, written around a.d. 90, describes an Asian army that will amass 200 million men: “And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.” That is a force that contains more people than were even alive at the time that was written.

Revelation 16:12 labels the leadership of this massive military as the “kings of the east,” indicating a bloc of Asian countries. Ezekiel 38 shows specifically which nations would comprise this bloc and details about its leadership: “And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, ‘Son of man, set thy face unto Gog, of the land of Magog, prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy concerning him” (Ezekiel 38:1-2; kjv, Young’s Literal Translation). Anciently, Rosh or Rus was the name of Russia. The Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary and several other Bible sources recognize this.

The passage then describes the campaigns of this force led by this “prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal.” Who is the “prince” steering this massive army?

A careful examination of these scriptural passages and others, matched to the framework of modern current events, makes the answer visible.

In the September 2014 issue of the Philadelphia Trumpet, editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote:

I strongly believe Vladimir Putin is going to lead the 200 million-man army. Just look at the power he already has. Can you think of any other Russian politician who could become so powerful and have the will to lead Russia into the crisis of crises? I see nobody else on the horizon who could do that. And only a tiny few years remain for the prince of Rosh to appear! … This much is absolutely certain: The restoring of Russia’s power by Vladimir Putin—the prince of Russia—was prophesied! He has already solidly allied Russia with China. The prophecy about the prince of Russia includes that main alliance. … The only question is whether or not Putin personally finishes the entire prophecy.

Since the Trumpet has this vital understanding of Vladimir Putin’s role in end-time prophecy, we believe it unlikely that a “Slavic Spring” is on the horizon for Russia—at least not one that would take Putin out.

God Wants More Than the Sorrow of the World

The traditional customs surrounding lent have an ancient origin, but also carry a deep lesson concerning repentance. Should Christians observe them?

Satan’s Counterfeit

Satan, the god of this world, has blinded all mankind (2 Corinthians 4:4; Revelation 12:9). These festivals are part of that deception. What kind of penalty is the “giving up of sweets, or television” for 40 days? The penitence of Lent is a form of worldly sorrow over the things that smite one’s conscience. But conscience is not a sufficient guide to right or wrong. The penitence of Lent is a counterfeit of genuine repentance of sin.

The Bible defines sin as “the transgression of the law” (1 John 3:4)—God’s law! God’s law defines right from wrong!

In the lead-up to God’s spring festivals, true Christians are admonished to examine themselves, to measure themselves against God’s law. They are to search out the sin in their lives and remove it. The Days of Unleavened Bread symbolize putting sin out of our lives. But mankind desires the temporary pleasures of sin and prefers to then do penance for them. Penance means to give up something in payment for sin. That is why the pagans, flocking wholesale into the professing Christian church, ousted the celebration of the Days of Unleavened Bread and substituted it with Lent—40 days of penance, of denying oneself certain physical pleasures in return for enjoying sin for the other days of the year!

God hates sin and doesn’t want us to show remorse for our excesses and acts of moral turpitude only to return to that way of life as soon as we have supposedly paid for our sin with self-punishment. Sin exacts the death penalty (Romans 6:23). No amount of self-reproach can pay for sin—only Christ’s blood can! God doesn’t want penance, but repentance.

As we approach the God-ordained spring festivals and begin to examine ourselves, let’s understand this counterfeit and deepen our understanding of why Paul admonished the Corinthians to let “godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of,” and how this “sorrow of the world” only “worketh death” (2 Corinthians 7:10).

Every day, you are at war. You confront tests, trials, temptations. You combat Satan, society and yourself. God’s Church wages warfare as we deliver God’s warning message to the world.

As a Christian soldier, you need to be training for war every day. That is the nature of our calling as the Bride of Christ. Christ needs a strong wife who has conquered the devil! So He allows Satan to wage war against us, and then He trains us how to fight back using God’s power and taking the victory! God absolutely blesses this kind of righteous warfare.

If the ancient Israelites had completely trusted and obeyed God from the beginning, they would have never needed to wage physical warfare. But they chose the path of war. In response, God told them exactly how He wanted them to go about it. Through His laws, God taught Israel how to wage righteous warfare. When Israel kept them, it won incredible victories. These laws apply directly to us in our spiritual warfare.

King David was a mighty spiritual warrior. Toward the end of his life, he wrote Psalm 18 to thank God for delivering him so many times from his enemies. (It is also recorded in 2 Samuel 22.) In verse 34, he said, “He trains my hands for war” (Revised Standard Version). God trained David for conquest. In Scripture, God trains our hands for spiritual war!

God Fights Your Battles

The book of Deuteronomy records Moses’s messages to the Israelites right before they entered the Promised Land. Deuteronomy is about preparing God’s people to conquer Canaan! The Israelites didn’t have to fight to possess the wilderness. But the Promised Land was full of idolaters, and the tribes of Israel had to fight for every foot of it! God allowed that for the same reason that He allows Satan to come after us today: to build character. This history also teaches us: The Promised Land is a magnificent reward, and we are going to have to fight for it.

The number one strategy for winning battles is one that armies in this world would ridicule. Read it in Deuteronomy 11:18-21. This hardly seems like a military strategy. But notice the promise in verses 22-23.

The most important principle God gave the Israelites was, Let me do the fighting! Concentrate on obeying me, keeping my commandments, loving me, walking in my ways, cleaving to me. Then I will drive your enemies out! Notice that God said the surrounding nations were greater and mightier than the Israelites. But Israel didn’t need to worry because He would conquer their enemies.

Our foremost battle tactic must be to stay close to God. Satan is stronger than us—but God is far stronger than Satan! When we truly possess His character—are born of Him—God will use us to drive out the evil in this world just as He used the Israelites to drive out the Canaanites.

Trump Administration Attacks Free Trade at G-20 Meeting

The Trumpet has prophesied of an alliance between a German-led Holy Roman Empire and the Asiatic nations of the East for years. Trumpet analyst Brad Macdonald wrote in the April 2017 issue of the Trumpet magazine:

Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry discusses this prophecy in his booklet Isaiah’s End-time Vision: “[W]e believe there may be a brief alliance between the German-led Holy Roman Empire and certain Asian powers (Russia, China, Japan—the kings of the east).” This German-led global trade conglomerate will be a “dynamic market of nations,” he states.

He wrote that seven years ago!

Mr. Flurry also warns that this temporary “mart of nations” is “going to besiege America, Britain and the Jewish nation.” This warning comes from a specific prophecy in Ezekiel 5. Here, God warns that the cities of America will burn with fire caused by riots and mass civil unrest. Millions of Americans will die. This violence will be inflamed by an economic siege—trade wars—inflicted by the resurrected Holy Roman Empire working in conjunction with China and other Eastern nations.

Consider these statements:

“The U.S. and other Israelite nations are surrounded or besieged by fierce and often unfair competition. … As the U.S. and Britain become less and less competitive worldwide, unemployment will steadily increase. … The United States and Britain are going to be left out in the cold as two gigantic trade blocs, Europe and Asia, mesh together and begin calling the shots in world commerce. Use God’s Name Truthfully

Do you know God—what He is like? God is known by His name. Do you use God’s name properly?

To the Religious

The spiritually minded must carefully consider the use of God’s name. It has become common practice to say Jesus Christ’s name repeatedly in a prayer-like fashion in private and public worship. Christ said, “But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking” (Matthew 6:7). Remember, Jesus Christ is God (Hebrews 1:8). God the Father has given Him a name “Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come” (Ephesians 1:21). To say Jesus Christ’s name repeatedly is a vain, or useless, repetition. To begin or end every sentence with His name is vain repetition. Notice that Christ recognizes that people who truly know God would not do such things. Vainly repeating God’s name is a heathen practice! We must reverence God’s name even in our praying.

But there is more. Jesus Christ said, “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46). Prayer without obedience is the most subtle form of blasphemy. Religious people who talk about God all the time but do not obey God’s Word and His commandments are guilty of a far greater sin than the ones who admittedly live a sinful life but do not pretend to be religious. Religious hypocrisy is a violation of the Third Commandment.

Jesus Christ vehemently went after the rampant hypocrisy in the spiritual leaders of the first century. We must cut such spiritual cancer out of our lives if we truly desire to enter into God’s Kingdom. Christ also said, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). Holding reverence for God with our speaking is clearly not enough. We must strive to obey God’s Word and commandments. We must desire to do God’s will.

It is time that all men, women and children deeply reverence God’s great name. His name represents His high office as Creator, His character and His dignity. God desires to be worshiped in “spirit and in truth.” He also commands us to use His name truthfully. Let’s be sure that we learn how to—then do so.
